Wounds Australia Silver Partner Solventum has launched Portrait of a Patient™, a free and interactive platform designed to empower healing through patient stories. 

The first animated patient case study, Cynthia, lives with a chronic venous leg ulcer and will be treated using compression therapy. Through a simple stepped approach, Portrait of a Patient guides health professionals through: 

• Discovering the challenges the patient is facing, such as managing leakage and odour, or trouble wearing their usual shoes 
• The science behind compression therapy and how to explain it to patients in ways that will secure their buy-in 
• Past challenges, including previous treatments 
• Step-by-step demonstration of applying compression therapy 
• Following up with the patient on their post-therapy experience. 

An emphasis on patient-centred care

In a webinar to launch the platform, Christine Murphy (Advanced Wound Nurse Clinician, Ottawa Hospital, and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Western University Graduate Wound Program, Canada) described venous leg ulcers as 'orphan' wounds that, unlike other common wound types, are often not managed on an ongoing basis by a specialist monitoring their progress over time. 

"We know that compression is gold-standard care, and we know that many patients have a hard time adhering to the compression that is needed to heal their ulcers," Adjunct Assistant Professor Murphy said. "It's critical that we understand why it is they're having a hard time with their compression, and with getting their wounds to heal." 

She said the platform's key goal is to raise awareness of patient-centred care, while trying to help clinicians break down barriers and find a plan that works. 

An innovative platform aimed at all skill levels
